Anyone can carve a spoon
Carving is a fun, low impact, accessible skill that anyone can learn. There are a number of places to jump in to the process, so you will begin by chatting with Jennica about what you want to learn and we can design a session to start where you are. We will move at a pace that is right for you, covering what you want to cover.
Sessions will last about 2 hours and we’ll do our best to make sure you leave with a mostly finished spoon to use as a model for future carving references and a number of online resources for continued exploration.
Bring a snack, water and weather appropriate clothes as carving is a physical activity and we’ll be working outside or in a greenhouse. All tools and wood will be provided but feel free to bring a tool or material you’d like to explore.
We can accommodate 1-2 carvers per lesson. 18+ but exceptions considered! $100 for one person and add $30 for the second person.
Scheduling a lesson
The farm has seasonally busy times and seasonally slower times and this will reflect in scheduling options. The best way to schedule a lesson is to send us a message and begin a conversation. In the message, consider sharing your skill level (are you totally new to carving, or looking to gain particular skills?) and what the best day of the week and general time frame would work for you.
Carved by hand
This kind of carving only uses a very sharp axe, a hand saw and a variety of different knives to achieve a functional, beautiful tool for cooking and eating.
We typically use “green” wood that has been freshly cut from the log. Straight grained cherry, birch, poplar, maple and apple are common, easy to find types of carving wood in this region.
